Members of UCU at Keele are taking part in the national marking and assessment boycott (MAB) as part of an ongoing dispute over pay and working conditions. In response, the university has said it will deduct 50% of participating members’ pay for as long as the dispute continues.

Keele UCU have organised a wage sharing scheme, where members who cannot or will not boycott marking and assessment for any reason are pledging to share 10% of their take home salary with the local hardship fund to support members facing deductions.

With the strong solidarity of members, we have made it halfway to our fighting fund goal with wage sharing pledges, but we still need £14,000 to meet our goal of fully supporting all members who have indicated to us that they plan to boycott marking.

Now we are asking for your help.

Facing 50% deductions is causing our members a lot of anxiety and worry in the current cost of living crisis. Our employer has deliberately issued this threat to try to minimise and undercut this industrial action at Keele.

This has backfired; lots of our members are rightly furious about these threats and we have a substantial group who are planning to boycott marking. But it’s important that those members have the solidarity of a safety net from their union to make sure bills still get paid.

  • Maybe you are a member of a UCU branch facing no MAB deductions, or where few members are taking part in the MAB, or where you have a healthy amount of local funds. Could your branch organise to donate and support the MAB at Keele?
  • Maybe you are an individual who supports Keele UCU, perhaps as a former staff member or student. Our members would appreciate any amount you can afford to donate.
  • Maybe you are a Keele staff member. If this is the case we would encourage you to pledge to wage share 10% of your take home pay with members taking action. Remember, your fellow members are making sacrifices fighting for conditions and pay that will benefit all of us. But if you feel you cannot commit to that, please donate as much as you can directly to the hardship fund.

Whatever your situation, please donate to boost our local fighting fund and support UCU members taking action at Keele. All funds donated will go directly to supporting Keele UCU members, whether in this dispute or in future action.
